It’s always good to find a nice place to eat, stop for a meal or cuppa and a piece of cake, or maybe a more intensive food or gift shop. You can, of course, combine all of those! Hartley Farm Shop and Kitchen is well worth visiting.
Hartley Farm is on the edge of the Wiltshire village of Winsley, a few miles west of Bradford on Avon and not far from the City of Bath. I will add the full address below.1
According to the Hartley Farm website, the Bowles family has been farming here in Winsley for over five generations, since the early 1800s.
With my four-year old grandson, Albie, staying for a few days a trip to the farm would provide some entertainment. There is a play area and also an opportunity to see goats, chickens and rabbits.
Enterprising farmers
Farm shops are a good way for farmers to bring in much needed revenue, in addition to providing local employment. Hartley Farm also has co-working spaces, and let out units to other businesses and a children’s nursery. It’s a very good enterprise under the direction of Tom Bowles.
The food is good and made from wonderful produce. You should see and taste the cream that is provided with the jam and scones! It was only an afternoon snack this time, so Mrs M and myself had the scones, my daughter a tasty flapjack. and Albie loved the Marshfield ice cream served in a cup, a novelty but practical.
The staff are very attentive and friendly, so it makes the whole experience so enjoyable.
The shop is well stocked not only with food, and a quality butcher but also some lovely gifts and things for the home. Be prepared to be tempted to part with your money!
Needless to say, Albie loved playing on the tractor and his imagination soon had hitching on the invisible plough and, in his words, after ploughing ‘the seeder’. He then went on to find the play area and enjoyed tackling the obstacle walk, although, on one of his final runs he finished headfirst into one of the old tyres! It’s all great fun.
There is a refreshment cabin by the play area, a thoughtful idea for parents and grandparents alike.
Since visiting, I have discovered, via the website, that there is an app that allows users to earn points, so do check this out before you visit. I have now downloaded it to my phone for future use and updates. We will be back soon!

Excellent food there. I often use the co-working space next door too.
